Laguna Vineyard
Overview
This vineyard sits above its competition in southern Monterey County, providing winegrapes comparable to its southern competitors. Perched in isolation at 1000 ft elevation in hills above the North shore of San Antonio Lake. Laguna is a truly unique ranch that experiences large diurnal temperature swings in the summer allowing to ripen fruit while maintaining balanced acids.
Laguna features sloped and hillside topography with block layout and row orientation to match the slopes. Ancient Limestone bed rock and leaner soils give Laguna the perfect balance of fertility and minerality to produce outstanding wines.

What Makes This Vineyard Distinct
Laguna is uniquely the “Lake Vineyard”, in that it is the closest vineyard to a large body of water in Monterey County, allowing for a distinct and unique microclimate. Lake San Antonio has an air conditioning effect in late summer and early fall on this vineyard, often creating an inversion layer effect that benefits the grapes during late season heat.
Planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Chandonny showcasing Laguna’s unique ability to produce quality fruit from two varieties that are rarely planted at the same site.
Laguna’s challenging soils composed mostly of Nacimiento silty clay loam have moderate water holding capacity, high pH and varying depths. While more difficult to farm than other sites within the portfolio the combination of climate and soil deliver a truly unique site and phenomenal wines.

Benefield Farms, LLC has been managing the Laguna Vineyard since 2016. Benefield is owned and run by Bob Denney. Bob has over fifty years of experience owning, operating and consulting on complex ag projects. Thirty eight of those years have been developing and managing thousands of vineyard acres in Northern San Luis and Southern Monterey counties, In this challenging period in the wine grape business that experience along with attention to detail lead to growing interest in the unique boutique qualities of the grapes grown at Laguna.
